It's a booking, not a schedule
Unlike your weekly or fortnightly bin collection, hard rubbish is typically an on-request service: you book a collection for your address (usually through your council's website, sometimes with an annual limit on how many bookings or how much volume), and a separate truck comes on a date assigned to you rather than a fixed recurring day.
A smaller number of councils instead run a scheduled hard rubbish "kerbside" pickup for the whole street or zone once or twice a year — if your council does this, the date is usually set well in advance and published on their site, not something you book individually.
What usually can and can't go out
Furniture, whitegoods, and general bulky household items are typically fine. Most councils exclude hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, gas bottles — see our e-waste guide and general hazardous-item guidance), car tyres, building/renovation waste, and green waste from hard rubbish specifically, since those have their own separate disposal paths.
Placing excluded items out with a hard rubbish booking is one of the most common reasons a council skips a collection entirely rather than partially collecting it — worth checking your own council's exact exclusion list before putting anything questionable at the kerb.
How to book yours
Search "[your council name] hard rubbish booking" — nearly every council runs this through their own website with a short online form. Where we have hard rubbish data for your council, it will show alongside your regular schedule when you search your address.
